This project is the transition of a Czech castle complex into an eco-conscious retreat. The building concepts designed in this winning competition entry are each sourced from the components outward. Our studio mapped the full timber yield and product resources of the Czech Republic prior to the start of design, ensuring that 100% of necessary building components could be sourced directly by the architect within a 150km range of the site.

They can retain the character of their history, breathing new life into older buildings, while embracing a more progressive and eco-conscious future. These projects often use fewer raw materials and consistently minimize the production of waste.

An urban timber rooftop pavilion study.

This pavilion structure is geared towards a net-zero construction path, with 100% sustainably forested mass timber products as the core structure. The space is dynamic and multi-functional, acting as a space for community collaboration, meetings, symposiums, and social events for tenants of the building.

London Timber Pavilion takes on a similar problem to Philip Johnson’s Roofless Church but derives a different solution by collapsing ornament and structure into a single form of construction. The pavilion was crafted by steam-bending individual oak petals to create a self-supporting canopy. The form of the canopy responds to wind, sunlight, and rain patterns on the terrace to increase all-year-round usability.

London Timber Pavilion is the result of engineering and design research into finding form through material components rather than sourcing components to construct an a priori form. This method re-orients the modernist paradigm by utilizing craft to generate form rather then create form and then bring craft to bear.

The material research began with a question: how can we reduce standard high embodied carbon materials in our structural systems (typically steel and concrete), in favor of the standalone utilization of low-embodied carbon materials (the solution here became timber).

This cross-laminated timber pool house study is surrounded by a delicate ecosystem of barrier ponds and coastal landscape, demanding for sensitive building practices.

Our design establishes an endless sense of the expansive landscape and horizon plans, allowing the architecture to supply a simple organic ceiling to an otherwise continuous horizontal experience of the landscape.

One of the primary design objectives for the Empire State Apartment was to fully open up and connect the front three-quarters of the plan. The apartment rotates around a sculpted entry bench of ten-foot-tall oak louvers supporting a structural glass bench.

By laminating the interior wood body and veneering the faces, we achieved sufficient stiffness to create both the screen and bench in one form. A plank of structural glass spans the length of the bench, uniting the entire structure into a single piece.

📍 Edgartown, MA The Vineyard Golf Club in Edga

📍 Edgartown, MA

The Vineyard Golf Club in Edgartown, MA is one of two certified organic golf courses in New England. This project, MV Golf, was a conceptual exercise in sustainable design and environmental mapping.

Our design to re-envision a lounge space is grounded in a systematic investigation, analysis, and celebration of what ‘organic’ means to this particular piece of land. The physical footprint of the course straddles critical watersheds, with implications for the entire island’s ecological and aquatic life systems. This fact was unknown to the institution and its designers prior to our research.

Utilizing GIS technology, we mapped out the individual layers of seen and hidden geographies, comparing structural density to the paths of underground aquifers and the critical pond systems they drain into. Our exploration discovered that the potential for environmental impact on this site was 100x the impact of the largest town on the island due to the fact that these unseen waterways pooled into the most fragile and important pond systems on the island.

Shou sugi ban is a traditional Japanese method of wood preservation utilizing heat. To produce the two hundred and forty-four 9’ by 16’ glue-laminated façade louvers, our team rented out a warehouse in the Bronx to assemble and burn the timber by hand.

Since our very first project, material research and sustainability have been some of our greatest priorities. In recognition of @theclimategroup's #ClimateWeekNYC, we will be sharing projects that reflect our firm’s long-held commitment to sustainable design and green building strategies.

An integral process in the completion of Chilmark House was the research and testing that went into producing the timber louvers that exist on the exterior of the structure.

Pictured here is the shou sugi ban facade at Chilmark House, a result of the need for a naturally weather-proof shell to withstand the winds and weather systems coming off the nearby ocean.

The space is capped with large windows bringing daylight and connection to the sea into the heart of the building. Hanging from the rafters are handmade lobster traps, used for decades and rebuilt of driftwood and old tire parts, connecting the market’s operations to its craft.

A fifteen-foot-long set of sliding glass windows grace the street side and open to directly greet the new raw bar, now accessible from the curb. Upon entering the formerly 7’6” space vaults to a double height wood framed interior, a nod to the old fishing shacks still dotting the village.

Being mindful of the local vernacular, we modernized the space while retaining historical and familial details. For example, the green on the exterior of the shingled building is the same shade that owner Betsy’s father painted the previous structure in the early 1970s.

Time and the growth of the island and the success of the business changed the demands on the building over time. The business of the market today is a hybrid of restaurant and grocer.

We strived to make more room for the customer experience, rethink the space to accommodate the growing back of house operations, and optimize it all for efficiency within the same footprint. This challenge was met without losing the wonderful culture of place that the Larsens have built.
