London Timber Pavilion

Studies in self-supporting timber structures.

London Timber Pavilion is a project that focuses on the thoughtful redesign of a pair of roof terraces in an urban setting. The redesign of these terraces was envisioned to promote wellness, allowing our client to enjoy more time outside whilst in the city.

The pavilion itself was crafted by steam bending individual oak petals to create a self-supporting canopy. The form of the canopy responds to wind, sunlight and rain patterns on the terrace to increase all year-round usability. Each petal has been uniquely fabricated from a standard timber sheet, utilizing a single curved mould for cost efficiency and minimal waste. This process resulted in unlimited possibilities for differentiation between the petals.

The aim of the project was to create structures that not only enhanced the overall health of our clients, but would also promote methods of hand-crafted and digital fabrication that are sustainable. The project was ultimately a study in self-supporting timber structures, in which we focused on the elimination of materials that hold more embodied carbon.

Our team, who worked in collaboration digitally as a 3-way transatlantic operation, strived to reduce the carbon footprint of the project through considered material selections and construction methodologies. We are proud to say that, despite the pandemic, this project was manufactured and hand-delivered successfully on site.
