At over three hundred feet long, The Ribbons, a th

At over three hundred feet long, The Ribbons, a three-story sculpture we designed in Hudson Yards, plays a key role in the architectural experience of the space.

100% of the components of this piece are “off the shelf.”

Formed of blackened steel ball and link, the sculpture was designed and segmented into four sections of bead strands.

This approach enabled us to design with a standard module, allowing for fabrication and mock-up processes to be completed in systematic increments without sacrificing the visual flow that was the generator of the idea.

The sculpture is linked at the ends by standard Home Depot-like brackets that are fitted to slide onto ceiling and wall-mounted rail systems. Devising this system allowed us to prioritize speed in the final install.

The sculpture was fabricated with @uapcompany in Long Island City where the factory fabrication and mock-up took several months.

However, UAP then took our segmented structure, flat packed it, brought it onto site (an in-construction atrium, high up inside an in-construction skyscraper amidst 6 skyscrapers' in-construction...logistics), and installed the whole system on standard u-channel in less than two weeks.

London Timber Pavilion focuses on the redesign of

London Timber Pavilion focuses on the redesign of a pair of roof terraces in an urban setting.

The architectural approach began with a research question: how can we reduce standard high-embodied carbon materials in our structural systems (typically steel and concrete), in favor of the standalone utilization of low-embodied carbon materials (in this case: timber)?

This project collapses the separation of ornament and structural into a single solution, while finding form from the material components rather than sourcing components to construct an a-priori form. i.e. we are as interested in how we build as much as what we build…

Being mindful of the local vernacular, we modernized the space while retaining historical and familial details.

We strove to make more room for the customer experience, rethink the space to accommodate the growing back-of-house operations, and optimize it all within the same limited footprint.

This challenge was met without losing the wonderful culture that the Larsen's have built over decades.

Chilmark House Living Room, Martha’s Vineyard.

Interior Design and Custom Light Fixtures are also designed by Schiller Projects.

Fireplaces are developed in dialogue with hundreds of years of design process and engineering. We have a book in the studio originally printed in 1780 in England describing the airflow mechanics of #rumfordfireplaces. We consider this manual a must-read for everyone on our team before they put pencil to paper on a fireplace sketch.

Over the past decade, this has been made more challenging by the enhanced understanding of airflow through our buildings themselves and creating passive thermal envelopes. Today we are looking at ways to create true wood-burning fireplace experiences that are sufficiently isolated from interior airflow that we can install them in zero-energy environments.

Moments from our site visit last week in Asheville, North Carolina.

This project, Elk View, is a progression of housing in America that reconnects with nature through sustainable building technologies.

The homes being built will run near net zero after extensive mechanical analysis. Each home has been modeled in our studio, with that model then being exported for testing by a specialty engineer before engaging with contractors. In this manner, we strive to establish the performance of each home before they can be reduced by the realities of competing demands in commercial development. We work with our builders closely to raise the bar without looking to raise the costs. (The environment is a cost we must calculate…)

Phase 1 of construction (pictured here), exceeds the North Carolina Green Build standards by 30-40%.

Perched above the vibrant city of Asheville and enmeshed in the iconic Blue Ridge Mountains, Elk View is a progression of housing in America that reconnects with nature through sustainable building technologies.

The project utilizes regionally fabricated plant-based components to create 25 unique structures. Utilizing local craft (the structure of the buildings is sourced within a 75-mile footprint), the project demonstrates the potential of prefabrication to solve diverse design challenges without sacrifice.

Phase 1, currently under construction, exceeds the North Carolina Green Build standards by 30-40%.

Our design journey for Sedona House unfolded by embracing the land's inherent obstacles.

We pivoted strategically, capturing isolated pockets and wide swaths of views in multiple directions. Extensive site and sun analysis unveiled these 'moments,' woven seamlessly into our architecture.

Throughout the course of a day, artificial light is seldom needed in any room. The fanned-out structure is treated homogeneously to minimize its visual footprint in the landscape.

By listening to the site, and letting it direct the design of the project, we capture a 360-degree experience of living in the desert without succumbing to the extreme temperatures and natural pressures of this climate.

Landscaping wisdom: Adapt with the land, don't battle it.

At Sedona House, we crafted a rock channel to guide rainwater to a stormwater pond using on-site rocks. This way if a big monsoon comes, the water is directed to the retention area, preventing floods in the arroyo below. 💧

As for the plants, we aimed to be light on the land while eschewing non-native species. 🌿

Sedona House unfolds by embracing the site’s inherent obstacles.

Each “program block” simplifies the management of the home while alternating between isolated pockets and wide swaths of views in multiple directions that accord their use with the time of the day they could be expected to be utilized.

The morning office, off the kitchen, looks back over the entry bridge and up to view the first rays of sunrise. The room is oriented to the solar path to capture the greatest average amount of morning light across the year.

Sustainable design on a tight budget, for a retiring Librarian and Speechwriter.

Sedona House nestles into a steeply sloping lot, delicately maneuvering mature vegetation, and navigating existing animal and water pathways.

The details speak to the harmony of nature and attainable innovation where a bridge stretches from the roadside to the front door to avoid disruption of these pathways. 🌵

The main volume of the house is conceptualized in three distinct programmatic pieces: one for guests, one for entertaining, and one for the owner. Each volume selects specific views of the surrounding mountains in at least two cardinal directions and solves for the basic functions of its individual program requirements.

Our work always focuses on connecting people and p

Our work always focuses on connecting people and places. We begin every process with consideration for who, what, and where. However, an interesting thing happened in the Brooklyn Mass Timber House: while the internal experiences connect to the city beyond they also insulate you from the broader feeling of “city.”

The materials here are not things you encounter in the steel and concrete of the city. The incorporation of nature into the interiors and natural lighting through the roof rebalances the experience of the urban outdoors.

As you enter in from the street, you get a view all the way through the building to the leafy backyard. As you ascend your views are framed by cathedral and sky. While the home is transparent it specifically re-frames the city to create relief from the action.

A structural skylight cleaves the building into two portions. Throughout the day light pours in and squeezes out into all the adjacent rooms spilling around the stair. The organization allows daylight to come to you wherever you are in the space. A surprising view develops as you stand on the second floor and look up, through the skylight to the exterior seeing the facade of the third-floor addition and back into the house above.

This same light source filters through the staircase, acting as a lantern, and bathing the Japanese maple at the base.
