Brooklyn Mass Timber House sets a new standard for sustainable, design-forward architecture.

The home is a testament to how design excellence and innovative construction processes can go hand in hand within a historic setting.

Here are some key highlights:
→ Low-carbon construction using mass timber methods
→ Biophilic design, featuring natural light, open spaces, and a stunning seven-foot-tall interior maple tree
→ Inverted design process: materials sourced first, design sculpted to fit, reducing waste and cost
→ Reuse of historical beams from the 1860s and 1880s, preserving the site’s heritage

In the wake of hurricane Helene, our hearts go out to the people of Asheville who have been affected. As the city begins the challenging process of rebuilding, we are committed to participating in and supporting the recovery efforts.

Over the course of our work in Asheville, we have gotten to know this vibrant and resilient community. Now they need help to rebuild homes and restore livelihoods. Through giving we can make a difference in the lives of those working to recover from this devastating event. We will be contributing our time to schools, community spaces, et al that need it in the coming efforts.

A home rooted in history and designed for the gene

A home rooted in history and designed for the generational growth.

The Chilmark House and Studio were crafted to blend seamlessly with the landscape, evoking the traditional New England Bank Barn.

With low-pitched roofs and a dark cedar facade, charred using the Shou Sugi Ban technique, these buildings are designed to always envelope one in nature and slowly release views of the sea.

The charred louvers along the facade were handmade by Schiller Projects and delivered to the builder onsite for assembly.

Stepping into the newly designed @larsensfishmarket is like entering a vibrant, modern homage to maritime heritage. The double-height entryway welcomes you with large west-facing windows that bathe the space in natural light, creating an airy, vibrant atmosphere that connects the harbor’s activity with the interior.

🦞 The space celebrates tradition with its timber-framed ceiling, reminiscent of New England fish shacks, and antique wooden lobster traps that add a touch of nostalgia. The glazed teal and white ceramic tiles not only enhance the maritime theme but also ensure ease and efficiency for cleanup.

🌿 Plus, our innovative bio-filter fabric system in the lobster tanks showcases our commitment to sustainable design, ensuring a chemical-free water circulation process.

The design problems were addressed through a combination of detailed analysis and strategic redesign:

🔄 Inefficiencies in layout: A deep dive into the market's operations led to a restructured layout that separated the prepared foods section from the traditional fish market, with additional customer service points to streamline operations.

💨 Ventilation and hygiene issues: The new design incorporated improved ventilation systems and easy-to-clean materials like glazed ceramic tiles, addressing the previous problems of odors and wet floors.

📐 Space utilization: The space was reimagined with a focus on maximizing functionality, including the introduction of a double-height entryway and an optimized kitchen area.

By tackling these key challenges head-on, we’ve transformed Larsen’s Fish Market into a modern, efficient, and welcoming space that stands ready to serve the community for years to come.

@larsensfishmarket, a long-standing and cherished community institution, tasked us with replacing their original building with a contemporary, revitalized space that would continue to serve as a hub for commerce and community exchange.

The goal was to create a design that would address the operational inefficiencies of the old market while maintaining the market's historical and community-centered identity.

The agreed-upon goals of the project were to:

✔️ Create a functional and efficient space that would support and enhance the market's commercial activities.

✔️ Revitalize the market’s architectural design to maintain its historical charm while integrating modern, sustainable practices.

✔️ Enhance the customer experience by improving the layout, ventilation, and overall aesthetic appeal of the market.

✔️ Integrate sustainable technologies into the design, particularly in relation to the market’s operations, such as the lobster tanks.

✔️ Ensure the market continues to serve as a community hub while attracting both local residents and tourists.

Through thoughtful design and innovative solutions, we’ve breathed new life into Larsen’s Fish Market, ensuring it remains a beloved community cornerstone for generations to come.

Perched atop a 1920s-era building, The High Line Penthouse presented an unusual challenge: designing a space that could seamlessly transition between a private residence for two art collectors and a public-facing gallery for their foundation.

Incubating a Global Climate Community 🌎

Climate Initiatives Group frequently provides space to third-party entrepreneurs, researchers, and scientists, allowing them to utilize their offices as a hub for collaboration and knowledge exchange.

1️⃣ - A custom-built standing desk crafted out of rift cut white oak.

2️⃣ - Positioned strategically around the reception area, temporary offices seamlessly integrate into established daily patterns, fostering a collaborative community without disruption.

3️⃣ - The inclusion of well-designed call rooms has been a significant success. These rooms, connected to communal areas and featuring good access to light and air, are designed with thick fabrics for sound absorption. This ensures these spaces are comfortable and quiet, avoiding common issues with poorly designed call rooms.

Instead of being composed of standard drywall, the partitions that divide the space are formed from vertical slats of Douglas fir, bringing warmth and natural beauty to the space. 🪵

Made from @fsc_us certified wood, these slats create distinct areas while allowing sunlight into the central all-hands area.

The financial structure and mission of Climate Initiatives Group ensured rapid expansion. With projections indicating a potential tripling or quadrupling of staff size, preserving the founder’s vision and workplace culture became paramount.

The challenge lay in translating and reinforcing this culture through architecture while accommodating newcomers unfamiliar with it.

➡️ Extensive studies were conducted, leading to the design of flexible spaces capable of adapting to evolving needs.

➡️ An analysis of meeting sizes and habits informed the right-sizing of office spaces and ensured meeting rooms could accommodate the appropriate number of attendees.

➡️ Offices were tailored to support the most frequent meeting type—typically involving three people and a screen—aiming to optimize meeting room efficiency and accessibility.

By crafting adaptable and scalable spaces, the organization’s growth trajectory remained unhindered, safeguarding both cultural integrity and operational efficiency.

The Climate Initiatives Group is a mission-driven investment and philanthropic firm focused on combating the climate crisis. They sought our firm out to re-envision their Midtown office space with a strong emphasis on sustainability and community.

We quickly discovered a robust alignment between our design philosophy and Climate Initiatives' mission and vision for their space, a rarity in commercial interiors typically not associated with innovation.

The resulting design serves as a standout case study in creating a green twenty-first century office space that fosters productivity, comfort, and anticipates and accommodates future growth and new uses.
